The Endocannabinoid System: Uncovering Cannabis’ Medical Benefits

Cannabis owes its impressive medical benefits to the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a complex cell-signaling system in our bodies. The ECS helps maintain homeostasis by regulating functions like mood, appetite, and sleep. When you consume cannabis, cannabinoids like THC and CBD interact with the ECS, providing relief from various symptoms and promoting overall wellness.

Author: Carrots and Flowers
Recipe type: Staple, Infused
Cuisine: Vegan, Cannabis
Serves: ¾ cup
Ingredients
  • 1 cup (240 ml) vegan butter
  • 2.22g ground cannabis, decarboxylated
  • Cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer
  • A glass container or jar with a lid
Instructions
  1. Decarboxylate the cannabis: Preheat your oven to 240°F (115°C). Spread the ground cannabis evenly on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally. This process activates the THC by converting THCA to THC through the release of carbon dioxide.
  2. Melt the vegan butter in a saucepan over low heat. Add the decarboxylated cannabis and stir to mix evenly.
  3. Simmer the mixture on the lowest possible heat for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally. Do not let the temperature exceed 200°F (93°C) to avoid burning off the THC.
  4. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool slightly. Place a cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer over your glass container or jar and pour the infused butter through it to strain out the plant material.
  5. Squeeze the remaining butter out of the cheesecloth or strainer and discard the plant material.
  6. Cover the container or jar with a lid and let the infused butter cool to room temperature. Store the vegan cannabutter in the refrigerator.
Notes
This recipe yields approximately 1 cup of vegan canna butter with an estimated 200 mg of THC, assuming a 15% THC content in the cannabis and a 60% infusion efficiency. To estimate the dosage, divide the total amount of THC (200 mg) by the number of servings in your recipe. Always start with a small dose and wait 1-2 hours for the effects to set in before consuming more.

But wait, will I burn my weed in the oven?

Decarboxylation is vital for creating cannabis edibles, as it activates the plant's psychoactive properties by converting non-psychoactive THCA into THC. Applying heat at around 240°F (115°C) for 30-40 minutes removes a carboxyl group (COOH) from the THCA molecule, resulting in THC and releasing CO2.
It's essential to maintain the correct temperature to prevent THC degradation. Overheating cannabis can cause THC to break down into a less psychoactive compound, CBN, while under heating leads to incomplete decarboxylation. By following the recommended temperature and duration, you can activate your cannabis effectively for infusion without burning it.
